Economic DevelopmentWe support American coporations that allow for their employees to recieve wage increases based on a percentage of their current pay to keep in time with inflation.Shawn 5/14/2005 12:29:02 AM
Economic DevelopmentTelecommuters are integral to economic growth. Corporations benefit from increased productivity, reduced overhead costs, and reduced recruitment and turnover costs. We must lift the unfair burdens upon our teleworkers.Nadine6/10/2005 7:29:32 PM
Economic DevelopmentThe Democratic Party must stand for smart economic development that works with communities. We cannot be content with the status quo because the challenges we face constantly change. Democrats must be for free trade with support for those displaced by trade liberalization.Scott7/2/2005 7:46:52 PM
Economic PolicyWe expect all employers to provide a living wage to their employees and support annual increases in the minimum wageRob5/4/2005 2:43:59 AM
Economic PolicyWe support the Telecommuter Fairness Act of 2005. We urge the amendment to title 4 of the United States code to prohibit employers from applying a tax rule known as "convenience of the employer." As it stands today, telecommuters are victims of double taxation on their hard earned incomes. Nadine6/10/2005 7:28:53 PM
Economic PolicyIf the Democratic Party has hope of staying alive as one of the two major political parties in this country, it must first reestablish its base by representing hard-working Americans. Liberal Democrats need to make economic policies that benefit the vast majority of workers primary campaign issues again because managing the economy is one area where Democrats, can and should always, hold the upper hand.Patrick6/17/2005 10:15:48 AM
Economic PolicyUS trade policies should promote, rather than limit, access to affordable generic medications in developing countries. WTO rules should be seen a ceiling for intellectual property protections; the U.S. should stop seeking additional drug company monopoly protections in bi- and multilateral trade negotiations 6/26/2005 12:59:09 PM
Economic PolicyPolicymakers must consider the greater economic vulnerability of women and girls and focus on non-medical needs for food and employment, transport, and child care 6/26/2005 12:59:45 PM
Economic PolicyThe United States should direct the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to drop 100% of the debt of the 50 poorest countries, using the internal resources of these international financial institutions to finance debt cancellation. 6/26/2005 12:59:59 PM

Economic PolicyThe US and other wealthy nations should not finance debt cancellation by making new contributions to the IMF or World Bank. Debt cancellation should be straightforward and simple, and it should result in additional resources available for investment in national priorities including health and education.  6/26/2005 1:00:27 PM
Economic PolicyMaintain access to Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income benefits. Stop privatization efforts that would cut disability benefit levels and divert trillions of dollars from the U.S. Treasury. Retain disability criteria that recognize episodic illnesses and functional limitations 6/26/2005 1:00:47 PM
Economic PolicyInclude new disability protections in reauthorization of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program 6/26/2005 1:01:03 PM
Economic PolicyRequire medically appropriate assessment of barriers to employment and self-support for all HIV-positive welfare beneficiaries. Link HIV treatment programs to food, job and other programs  6/26/2005 1:01:13 PM
Economic PolicyEstablish a new federal HIV sanction exemption that would allow participation in workfare and training but protect against loss of lifesaving health care and other supports due to welfare sanctions.  6/26/2005 1:01:24 PM
Economic PolicyThe cornerstone of US fiscal policy must be a cyclically balanced budget. Deficits are appropriate during downturns, but cannot be systematic. Once we establish our priorities through national discussion, we must make sure that they are paid in the long-run.Scott7/2/2005 7:48:40 PM

EducationThe Young Democrats and The Democratic Party as a whole should support a large increase in federal funding for local education and allocate more money to state education funding. Schools should not have to cut classes and limit opportunities available to students due to budgetary constraints. Eugene5/30/2005 1:33:29 PM
EducationWe believe that all students, including those with disabilities, have the right to a quality education. In order for school districts to provide these services we call on Congress to fulfill its promise and fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which has never been funded.Nathaniel6/1/2005 12:32:27 PM
EducationWe agree with the premise of the No Child Left Behind Act that every child desires the same standard of education and that school districts should evaluate how they are providing these educational services. We believe that in order to fully evaluate the performance of each child, each state should establish an accountability system which considers progress the child has made over a year in content standards, discipline, and attendance. We attest that one size does not fit all, and one test given once a year does not accruately reflect the performance of a child, teacher, or school. Nathaniel6/1/2005 12:35:58 PM
EducationI strongly believe we need to take a closer look at the educational needs of our children. Pres.Bush "No Child Left Behind" Act needs to be re-evaluated so that it applies to all children. It also needs to detail specific ways of assisting teachers and school systems to accomplish the goals set. Also funding education needs to be a first priority before weapons and rebuilding Iraq.Ninah6/17/2005 9:48:55 AM
EducationCurricula should build self-esteem and encourage respect for others and include issues relevant to both genders regardless of sexual orientation and to transgender youth 6/26/2005 1:04:04 PM
EducationEnsure comprehensive school-based programs with HIV prevention components that reach young people before behaviors are established and include information on delaying sexual behavior and on how young people who are sexually active can protect themselves from HIV and other STDs 6/26/2005 1:04:15 PM
EducationRecognize that sex education in our schools is essential to curbing the transmission of HIV and other STDs, and that age-appropriate information for youth will save lives 6/26/2005 1:04:23 PM
Education Create specific programming and initiatives that will create greater understanding and tolerance for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities 6/26/2005 1:04:33 PM
EducationWork aggressively to reduce HIV-related stigma through fact-based education that will combat the public perception that HIV infection is related to immoral behavior 6/26/2005 1:04:40 PM
EducationExpand non-written means of education and communication, including pictograms, radio, drama and songs to better convey AIDS and public health messages 6/26/2005 1:04:48 PM
EducationAll children shall havva access to a fair, equitable, and comprehensive education.James6/28/2005 9:20:47 AM
Education * We recognize that smaller classroom size allows students to have more individual attention from teachers, thus translating to an accelerated learning curve, especially in pre-secondary education, and therefore actively support the funding of programs designed to reduce classroom sizes. * We believe in every child’s right to attend pre-school and full day kindergarten. We also recognize every qualified student’s right to attend Head Start and recommend that the program continue to be funded at the Federal level. * We oppose any plan that increases the inequality of educational opportunity or that increases ethnic or socioeconomic isolation or diverts public moneys into private schools. * We recognize the need for programs geared to preparing students to compete in today’s global market. Therefore we support the implementation of programs such as bilingual and two-way bilingual education in order to promote a cross-cultural exchange of ideas in the classroom. In addition, we support a multicultural model for education as a means of achieving a holistic approach to learning. * We support a strong health component being taught in the pubic schools that addresses issues of family planning, prevention of STDs (including HIV/AIDS), social relationships, contraceptives and abstinence. We also support making condoms available to middle and high school students. * We support the local involvement of parents, students and teachers on school advisory boards and state education panels. chris7/1/2005 8:03:10 AM
Education* We support programs aimed at reducing violence both inside and outside the public school system through educational resources such as after-school programs, workshops and community programs that advocate constructive conflict resolution as well as the understanding and acceptance of the inherent cultural and ideological differences in society. * To ensure that the current and future generations of public school students are educated in an environment conducive to learning, we recommend that the Federal government assist state and local governments in the construction and innovation of public school facilities. We strongly Support Educating Parents, Teachers, and Youth on the affects of drug use, drug distribution, and gang activity. We strongly support federal funding for after school programs and workforce training to help our poorest communities combat the effects of gang activity chris7/1/2005 8:07:52 AM
EducationEducation should focus on the core skills that American students need to compete in the global marketplace. We also must raise access for urban and rural students in the public school system.Scott7/2/2005 7:53:55 PM
Electoral ReformWe support the National Election Day be moved to a Saturday so that more of our workers and students can actually vote and support all of the states to move to Saturday voting.Daniel5/11/2005 6:01:56 PM
Electoral ReformIt is essential that the nation recognize the importance of its democratic vote, and that it mandate a National Voter Holiday to ensure that everyone realizes their right to vote. Jorge 5/19/2005 11:07:31 AM
Electoral Reform"We support having elections on a day that does not disenfranchise any group. We support holding elections on days other than Friday, Saturday or Sunday as Muslims generally observe Sabbath on Friday, Jews on Saturday, and Christians on Sunday.Natalie5/19/2005 11:44:57 AM

Electoral ReformElection of the bulk of the Democratic National Committee currently recedes at the level of the State Executive Committees. This strongly disadvantages young people from gaining equal representation on the DNC. Selection of non-automatic DNC members (Party Chairs, etc) should move from the State Exec Committees to the Democratic Convention Delegates elected by the Public every four years. Convention Delegates are much more representative of the public and would lead to a much more representative DNC.fff5/21/2005 1:19:09 AM
Electoral ReformI feel that we must do-away with the electoral college. The Democratic party, which stands for equality for everyone, must make sure that everyone has an equal vote.Nick5/21/2005 3:19:48 PM

Electoral ReformWe believe that in order to have a fair and democratic election with the greatest participation states should adopt electoral methods such as same day registration, early voting, and voter identified ballots for electronic voting machines in order to encourage participation and reduction voter intimidation campaigns. Nathaniel6/1/2005 12:38:49 PM
Electoral ReformIn the spirit of fairness and equity we believe that when a person has paid their debt to society and the judicial system has approved their reentry into society, these persons deserve the rights of full citizenship and no law should be created which eliminate their right to vote.Nathaniel6/1/2005 12:40:16 PM
Electoral ReformAgain the #1 and #2 states for turnout of young, Dem voters in 2004 were MN and WI. A key reason for this is the option of election day voter registration in both states, which also empowers new citizens, low income voters & communities of color. YDA must lead the state-by-state charge for EDR in years ahead.Ryan6/17/2005 8:48:38 AM
Electoral ReformWe believe that in order to have a fair and democratic election with the greatest participation states should adopt holidays on Election Days so that those who must work to support their family and would otherwise not have time to go to the polls can participate in the Democratic process.Jim6/18/2005 8:34:35 PM
Electoral ReformWe believe that in order to protect our environment, improve our economic stability as a nation and of all Americans, and in order to remove one of the biggest funding sources of the Republican Party, that we must take strong measures to reduce our oil consumption, not just in gasoline for our cars but also in the consumption of plastic, as individuals, in our institutions of higher learning and government offices and every aspect of our civilization.Jim6/18/2005 8:41:46 PM
Electoral ReformElected officials should represent ALL of their constituents, not just the 51% needed to get into office. To that end, non-partisan drawing of districts will increase accountability by allowing more moderates to win and give general election voters resonable alternatives.Scott7/2/2005 7:55:07 PM
Environment and EnergyGovernment should invest in research for the US to become energy independentRob3/24/2005 12:25:44 AM
Environment and Energy- By discouraging telework, the convenience rule increases oil consumption and gasoline prices, air pollution and traffic congestion. It contributes to wasteful government spending on transportation infrastructure. Nadine6/10/2005 7:56:39 PM

Environment and EnergyThe US should focus on innovation to domestically produce energy in an environmentally-friendly manner. Government energy policy should focus on providing incentives for R&D into and end-user purchasing of, green energy.Scott7/2/2005 7:58:28 PM
EthicsI beleive that the Democrats need to have a more center veiw on the MORAL issues which dominated the decisions of many Americans all over the U.S. to vote for the incredibly conservative George W. Our next Presidential Candidate needs to be a moderate democrat on the issues of abortion and gay rights, this should greatly improve the number of christians who want to vote democrat, but are citicized because of the 2 main issues stressed by religious Republicans of gay rights and abortion. With America becoming more and more conservative, the democrats will never previal if we do not come to a common center point on these 2 issues, so the Republicans can not pin democrats as being "un- religious" anymore.Monica5/15/2005 3:02:00 PM
EthicsThe Democrats must uphold the ideals that make our party strong. If we choose to compromise our stance on reproductive and marriage rights, we are cutting off the very legs we stand on. As young Democrats, we have come to this party because of our beliefs in the progressive Democratic platform which powerfully opposes the oppression of disadvantaged communities. Should the party compromise its stance on the issues in pursuit of power, idealistic Democrats will be betrayed. We cannot afford to disillusion the heart of the Democratic Party.Taylor5/19/2005 11:31:15 AM
EthicsAs a party of Ethical values. We need to make sure that we support increased funding for the fight against global poverty and AIDS. It is important for the geopolitical stablity of our nation, and the global community to rocognise the importance of assistance to the more than One Billion people living for under one dollar a day. The UN recently said that the AIDS crisis is becoming pandemic, and we are not taking the neccessary steps to promote the millennium promise of ending HIV/AIDS by 2015. We must stand strong as a party to fight global poverty and AIDS. Eli6/3/2005 2:48:59 PM

EthicsWe believe in the "Pro-Cure" movement. Stem Cell research is no longer a political issue, but a quality of life issue. Stem Cell research will not promote human cloning, but will improve the lives of millions who suffer from diseases and disabilities. It is the next frontier of science that must be explored to meet the needs of American and World Citizens.Susan6/18/2005 8:02:56 AM

Health CareWe support that healthcare is not a privilige but a human right, that should be afforded to every American regardless of gender, ethnicity, age sexual orientation, education or level of income. We affirm that if affordable and quality healthcare is good enough for our representatives in Washington then it should be nothing less than a basic human right for the average citizen.Robin5/3/2005 5:57:21 PM
Health CareOur expensive system leaves 45 million Americans uninsured in the world’s richest nation. Access to care should be a right, not a privilege. A system of universal coverage will save money, eliminate waste, and provide flexibility and security. Most importantly, it will save lives.Nathan6/18/2005 10:55:17 PM
Health CareWe need to be strong in our support of stem cell research. The more funding we have to study stem cells the quicker we can turn it from being research into actual medicine. Many young people are affected by diseases and illness that could be cured by stem cells. We should help people become more educated on this issue and what stem cells can do.Ashanti Fayshel6/20/2005 9:16:04 AM

International PolicyYDA should support our troops, opposes the continued military occupation of Iraq, and urge the Government of the United States of America to plan immediately for the withdrawal of its military forces from Iraq. This plan should specify a target date for the completion of the withdrawal. The target date should be no later than June 2006. Withdrawal should begin soon to signal our good intentions. The United States should announce that it has no plans for a long-term presence in Iraq, except for that associated with normal diplomatic relations between countries.Kevin5/30/2005 10:41:17 AM

Law and JusticeThe drug war is an utter failure. In order to reduce the harms done by drugs in America, we must emphasize prevention, treatment and harm reduction strategies. Law enforcement is an integral part of an intelligent, winning strategy to reduce drug-related harm, but cannot be the central response to drugs in our communities. We want polices based on science, compassion, and a respect for individuals rights and responsibilities. We want families kept intact, not torn apart by cruel and ineffective incarceration. We want nonviolent addicts cured of addiction, not warehoused with violent felons. We want our jails and prisons reserved for those who would harm others, not those who make poor choices or stupid mistakes. The experiment in mass incarceration of drug users that has lead to the US having the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world must end. Prevention and treatment first and foremost, with an emphasis on preventing or curing addiction, and preventing overdose, HIV, or other negative outcomes of drug use The first act of any Democratic Governor or President should be to appoint a physician or public health expert to direct drug policy for the state or nation, and then let that expert pursue a policy of moving resources away from prisons and into health programs.Glenn6/29/2005 3:06:49 PM

OtherResolution Supporting California’s Impact on the Democratic Presidential Nomination Process WHEREAS California’s impact in determining the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party for the last several elections has decreased, and WHEREAS the current front-loaded primary system often results in fewer than 200,000 Iowans and 300,000 New Hampshire voters in the first weeks of January in effect choosing the Party’s nominee before being tested in larger states like California, and WHEREAS California, as the highest populated state in the nation, deserves greater influence in determining the party’s nominee than simply serving as the fundraising capital for national candidates and their campaigns, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the California Young Democrats (CYD) encourages presidential primary reform efforts that will: • Allow a greater number of campaigns to begin at the grassroots level and build momentum; • Provide a nominating process that remains competitive for a longer period of time in order to give the public a greater opportunity to engage the campaign and become informed about the candidates; • And create a system that increases the likelihood that Democrats in all states will have an effective voice in the selection of nominees, and RESOLVED that CYD call on the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) Commission on Presidential Nomination Timing and Scheduling to seriously consider the California (or Graduated Random System) Plan which features a schedule consisting of 10 two-week intervals, during which randomly selected states will hold their primaries. This 20-week schedule is the approximate length of the traditional presidential primary schedule. California Young 7/1/2005 4:30:37 PM

OtherIn order to build a more perfect union, we must educate ourselves and our fellow Americans about people who may be "different" from us as individuals, about the intersections of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disibility, religion, etc. We must work to build a more conscious America. Some Republican’s scoff at our willingness to be “politically correct”, but when they do so, they only expose their blind and ignorant commitment to upholding the patriarchal, white supremacist, homophobic, elitist power structures that exist in our soceity. In the course of our everyday work on the issues that matter to real Americans, we as individuals should be conscious of these intersections. We must also be cautious when we give in to stereotypes or when we group people based on a single characteristic. This work is necessary if we are to build a progressive, governing coalition and a better world.Kyle7/12/2005 8:10:00 AM

To learn more, please visit the YDA Rural Caucus working group website at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ydaruralcaucus --- We hope you consider joining the movement to renew our Rural America! We need to be the party of smart growth, of a return to community planning done by the communities, and not by the developers. We need to lead by emphasizing the need for growing communities and their leaders to plan for the future and create official maps like those from times when they were founded for developers to build to, not just be a rubber stamp or argumentative body creating the broken communities we get today. Where communities are shrinking, we need to re-design and re-claim vacant areas for the future. Herb6/23/2005 9:34:49 AM
